Rabbi Herbert Baumgard was a teacher, an activist, and a loving friend and father, who founded Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest, the largest Reform congregation in the Southeast. He was an inspiration not only to his friends and family, but also to the community.
The Baumgard family, in honor of Rabbi Baumgard’s legacy, have made a generous gift to the FIU Libraries, which will help support our vision of engaging with local and global partners to foster student-centered learning and to support internationally recognized research. This gift also includes copies of his sermons, which will be digitized and uploaded to the FIU Panther Repository.
In honor of the gift, the Hub on the second floor of the Green Library has been renamed as the “Rabbi Herbert Baumgard Learning Hub.” A small, private dedication of the space was held on Wednesday, January 17th for the Baumgard family. Howard Lipman, Senior Vice President of University Advancement at FIU, said that FIU is “honored to have this school, this Library, and this Learning Hub be the place where the life and work of Rabbi Baumgard continues teaching others.”
