Despite a history of techno-idealistic rhetoric and reform efforts in the United States, technology integration in education has tended to reinforce an inequitable and unjust social status quo in our classrooms and more broadly. Today, issues of technology and equity in education are often framed in terms of “access” and digital “participation,” both measures of formal equality that may leave us significantly short of substantive equity. This critical issue is formed around a general critique of technology as a value-free subject or set of tools in education. The contributing authors demonstrate what it means to interrogate our assumptions about technology in broader ethical contexts and critically engage technology specifically for transformative educational goals of equity and social justice.: by Adam Papendieck

Collection of organizations & projects using technology in the service of social justice.

This paper provides analysis and insight from a collaborative process with a Canadian sex worker rights organization called Stella, l'amie de Maimie, where we reflect on the use of and potential for digital technologies in service delivery. We analyze the Bad Client and Aggressor List - a reporting tool co-produced by sex workers in the community and Stella staff to reduce violence against sex workers. We analyze its current and potential future formats as an artefact for communication, in a context of sex work criminalization and the exclusion of sex workers from traditional routes for reporting violence and accessing governmental systems for justice. This paper addresses a novel aspect of HCI research that relates to digital technologies and social justice. George Hofstetter is a 19 year-old sophomore at Menlo College, computer programmer, diversity consultant, motivational speaker, and mentor. George has participated in various tech events in his community and across the country. At the age of 13, George began his love for coding at Qeyno Labs Hackathon, an Oakland California based tech company. By the age of 16 George had found his passion, combining social justice and technology. George then decided to start a tech company at the age of 16 years old, in hopes to help other kids of color gain entry into the tech world as innovators not just consumers.
