What are Open Education Resources (OER)?

Open Education Resources (OER) is an alternative to high cost textbooks; they are teaching, learning, and research materials that can be freely used and include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and grading rubrics. In this guide, we include OER, library materials, and other low cost alternatives that can replace or supplement high cost textbooks. The FIU Libraries are here assist you to find, create, and implement OER in your courses.

OER lends itself to Open Pedagogy which is the practice of engaging with students as creators of information rather than as just consumers. It's experiential learning where students demonstrate they understand through the act of creation. The products of open pedagogy are student created and open so they live outside of the classroom creating an impact on the greater community.
