Guide to finding and using eBooks.

WHY CAN'T I DOWNLOAD THE BOOK I WANT?

Some of our ebooks only allow one user at a time to download a book.  Someone else may be using the title and you will need to wait for the title to become available.

Please note titles in the ACLS Humanities EBook collection cannot be downloaded.

CAN I DOWNLOAD BOOKS TO MY KINDLE?

Most of our downloadable ebooks require the use of Adobe Digital Editions to transfer the book to your e-reader.  Kindles are not compatible with Adobe Digital Editions, but you can download apps on the Kindle Fire which will support the ability to checkout and download ebooks which use Adobe Digital Edition software.

Ebooks which can be downloaded in PDF or Mobi format can be transferred from a computer to your Kindle by using the USB cable.

What formats can my e-reader read?

To determine which file formats your e-reader can use, please refer to the user guide for the device.  Wikipedia has a convenient article of Comparison of ebook formats, which includes compatibility with many devices.

How long can I checkout an ebook?

Most ebook titles which require checkout may be downloaded for up to seven days.  The book will automatically expire, but may be available to check out again if there is no one waiting to access the title.

CAN I RETURN AN ITEM EARLY?

To return a document early:

  1. In Adobe Digital Editions, click on the arrow icon on the document you wish to return early.
  2. Select Returned Borrowed Item.
  3. Click OK.
  4. You may also wish to Delete Item from your library by clicking on the same arrow.

Ebooks that are downloaded using Adobe Digital Editions automatically expire at the end of the checkout period. They may still appear on your device but you will not be able to open the file.
