ABBYY Finereader

ABBYY FineReader is a powerful and user-friendly Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software designed to help users convert scanned documents, images, and PDFs into editable and searchable formats. Widely recognized for its ease of use, ABBYY FineReader is ideal for individuals looking to enhance the accessibility and usability of their text-based resources.

ABBYY FineReader is installed on several computers in both the Digital Collections Center and the Digital Scholarship Studio. If you are new to the software or need guidance, training sessions can be arranged to help you get started.

Why choose ABBYY for your project?

Strengths

  • User-Friendly Interface: Intuitive design makes it easy for users of all skill levels to navigate and operate the software.
  • Multilingual Support: ABBYY FineReader can recognize and process multiple languages simultaneously, making it suitable for multilingual documents.
  • Text Editing Features: The software allows for straightforward rekeying and editing of text within the application, streamlining post-processing tasks.
  • Image Processing: Easy deskewing and correcting pages that have not been scanned clearly.
  • Chart and Data Recognition: Offers robust capabilities for extracting text and data from charts, tables and other structured formats.

Limitations

  • Manual Workflow: Our versions of ABBYY FineReader require more hands-on interaction compared to other automated OCR tools, which may limit its efficiency for high-volume digitization projects.
  • Limited Suitability for Large-Scale Projects: While excellent for smaller jobs, ABBYY FineReader’s manual nature may make it less practical for extensive digitization workflows that may benefit from batch processes.
