Suffrage and First Wave Feminism in America

Provides access to digital collections of primary sources (photos, letters, diaries, artifacts, etc.) that document the history of women in the United States; These diverse collections range from Ancestral Pueblo pottery to interviews with women engineers from the 1970s.

The magazine was intended to entertain, inform and educate the women of America; In addition to extensive fashion descriptions and plates, the early issues included biographical sketches, articles about mineralogy, handcrafts, female costume, the dance, equestrienne procedures, health and hygiene, recipes and remedies and the like.

First newspaper for women issued from 1849 until 1853 under the editorship of Amelia Bloomer (1818-1894); Published in Seneca Falls, New York and priced at 50 cents a year, the newspaper began as a temperance journal for home distribution among members of the Seneca Falls Ladies Temperance Society.

A monthly journal deeply involved in the roots of the American feminist movement; It was owned and edited by Matilda Joslyn Gage, American womens rights advocate, who helped to lead and publicize the suffrage movement in the United States.

The Remonstrance was the official publication of the Massachusetts Association Opposed to the Further Extension of Suffrage to Women. First published annually and later quarterly in Boston from February, 1890 until October, 1913, it provided a forum for women who opposed the expansion of voting rights to women.

A weekly womens rights newspaper, was the official publication of the National Woman Suffrage Association formed by feminists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony to secure womens enfranchisement through a federal constitutional amendment.

The New Citizen (1909-1912) -- Considered the first woman newspaper publisher in Washington State, Missouri Hanna was the founder and editor of The New Citizen, the successor to her earlier suffrage publication Votes for Women.

Western Woman Voter (1911-1913) -- Established to serve all women voters throughout the western U.S., Western Woman Voter began publication following the passage of suffrage in Washington State. Adella Parker, a popular Seattle lawyer and prominent suffragist, was the driving force behind both it and the suffrage movement. It also served as a print forum for Parkers progressivist sympathies regarding political and social reform.

This collection documents Patricia Lindhs and Jeanne Holms liaison with womens groups and their advocacy within the White House on issues of special interest to women; Topics include liaison activities with over 300 womens organizations, agency womens groups and program units, advisory committees on women and women appointees; public policy; and legislation and regulation of womens civil rights in the government and the economy.
