Genealogy Research

Genealogy resources at the FIU Libraries and online

what information do i need to have?

Compile as much information about your family members as possible.  Some basic, fundamental facts that make for a more successful search include but are not limited to:

  • Last and first names
  • Dates and places of birth, death, and marriage
  • Social Security numbers
  • Passport numbers or naturalized citizenship papers
  • Military records
  • Family Bibles
  • Talk to your family members, both direct and distant relatives, take notes or record the conversations (get their permission first)
  • Think out of the box -- where else could I find genealogy resources?
