Citing Instagram in MLA

For MLA follow this format:

Author's Real Name if Known. (Author's Username). "Entire text of the instagram, in quotes; do not change capitalization." Message Date, message time. Instagram.

Example:

Barnett, John.  (johnbarnett). “Never get sick of these palm trees.” 1 February 2016, 3:58 p.m. Instagram.

Citing Digital Images

When you find an image

  • A little investigative work will be needed
  • It’s hard to go backwards with only an image.
  • Make sure you note as much as you can when you find the image.
  • You'll need the who, what, & where of your image.
  • The reverse image search on Tineye.com sometimes helps find an original owner of an image.

Collect INFO

  • Title OR Description (When there is no title, create a description i.e. man holding a banana)
  • Contributor (can be a username, author, handle, artist, photographer, post creator, or corporation)
  • Website title
  • Publisher/Sponsor (Twitter, Facebook, Giphy, Getty Images, tumblr, FLICKR, Instagram, YouTube, Google Images, etc.).
  • URL (web address)
  • Date Published (When was it taken, created, uploaded, copyrighted, or updated?) OR (No date, Use n.d.)
  • Date Viewed/Accessed

Find the info for Google Images

  1. When you find an image on Google, click once on that image.
  2. A new window will open. The image will appear with a column next to it. At the top of the column is a link titled "Website for this Image".
  3. Click on that link and it will take you to the website of that image.
  4. Once you are on that website, follow the directions above for finding information about an image on a website.
