INFORMATION AREA

The Information Area is designed for self-service. Some of the materials and resources include:

  • Public, fully networked computer workstations with access to all library resources
  • Browsing materials, i.e. current LAC newsletters and research journals
  • Displays highlighting library collections

For assistance with your research, LACiC is staffed by a librarian and/or student assistant Monday - Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

With close proximity to the office of the LACiC Librarian, Reference, Government Documents, the General Collection and other library resources, the Information Area serves as a comfortable center to learn about Latin America and the Caribbean. To schedule a research consultation session with the LACiC librarian, please contact Gayle Williams directly, by email or by phone.

INSTRUCTION & RESEARCH SERVICES

LACiC provides library instruction sessions when requested by class instructors for any credit-bearing course. The LACiC Librarian can also provide a library instruction session or workshop geared towards assisting a special project within your unit or addressing the need of a particular group of students.  Most library instruction sessions take place in the Green Library classrooms (and can also take place at Hubert Library with advance notice). The LACiC Librarian can also provide an instruction session in your classroom if it has a computer, projector, and Internet access.

These workshops and classes can help you and/or your class to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate and effectively use the information.  The main objectives can be customized to include several or all of the following:

  • become familiar with traditional resources
  • develop and refine search strategies
  • learn how to navigate in an electronic research environment
  • identify resources not owned at FIU and the most appropriate way to get them
  • identify and evaluate Internet resources

CUSTOMIZED RESEARCH CONSULTATIONS

Whether you’re an undergraduate or graduate student or faculty member, the LACiC Librarian is available to assist you in your research.  Please contact Gayle Williams to schedule a research session. Phone: (305) 348-2228  Email: Gayle.Williams@fiu.edu
