Open Access Publishing at FIU

This guide provides application guidelines and procedures for the OAP discounts and other options

There's Another Way to OA @ FIU

Can't pay the author's APC fees to publish OA?

There's another way!

Most traditional publishers will give you permission to publish your articles as Open Access, but under specific conditions.

Some state conditions for the time of publication and some after an embargo period (usually 1 year from publication).

They generally allow you to deposit your article in your institutional repository (FIU Digital Commons), a subject repository, or on your personal webpage.  Terms are listed on the publisher's website and at SHERPA/RoMEO.

Conditions might state:

  • Can archive pre-print and post-print or publisher's version/PDF
  • Can archive post-print (ie final draft post-refereeing) or publisher's version/PDF
  • Can archive pre-print (ie pre-refereeing)
  • Must provide citation and link to publisher's version

See the Another Way to OA @ FIU guide for information, guidelines and directions to make your publication OA through the FIU's institutional repository, Digital Commons.

If you have any questions about how to do this at FIU, contact Jin Xiu Guo (jiguo@fiu.edu) or Jill Krefft (jkrefft@fiu.edu).

Where Should I Publish My Research

This guide provides questions and criteria you can use to evaluate and identify appropriate and trusted journals in which to publish your research and scholarship.

This workshop is given once per semester and by request.  See the workshops tab for the current schedule.

OPEN ACCESS PUBLISHING DISCOUNTS FOR ALL FIU AUTHORS

Open Access publishing discounts for all FIU authors are available through BioMed Central including Chemistry Central and SpringerOpen,  MDPI, and IGI Global.  These initial discounts will be applied to author publishing/processing fees by the publisher prior to invoicing for author's fees.

The FIU Open Access Publishing program supports the publication of FIU research in scholarly open access (OA) journals, making our research freely and globally available. The fund is supported by the FIU Libraries as part of our larger Open Access Initiative including the FIU Digital Commons.

GUIDELINES FOR DISCOUNTS

BioMed Central, Chemistry Central or SpringerOpen – FIU faculty and graduate students are entitled to a 15% discount on the article-processing charge (APC) when publishing in a BioMed Central, Chemistry Central or SpringerOpen journal.  FIU has a Supporter Membership.

How to claim your discount:

1 - If you submit your manuscript from on-campus, you will be automatically recognized as affiliated with FIU, so when you reach the payment section, it will state that you have been granted a 15% discount.

2 - If you submit your manuscript from off-campus, sign-in for off-campus access to the FIU Libraries, you will be automatically recognized as affiliated with FIU, so when you reach the payment section, it will state that you have been granted a 15% discount.

3 – If you submit your manuscript otherwise, you will have to claim your discount.  When submitting your manuscript you will reach the payment section.  Select option 3 and, in the drop-down menu, locate Florida International University.  When customer service receives your request, they will check to verify your affiliation with FIU.  Once the process is complete, they will contact you, the author, at which point you will be able to complete your submission.

Cambridge - See this page for specific journals covered by this membership agreement.

IEEEIEEE will apply a discount to current IEEE members. IEEE members will receive a 5% discount, and members of IEEE societies will receive a 15% discount. Discounts cannot be combined or applied to any other fees such as overlength or color page charges.  More specifics on article processing charges at IEEE.

Select publications also offer special promotional discounts to society members. Please check the individual journal home pages, for more information.

IGI Global - FIU authors are entitled to publish in IGI Globals journals at no charge (This waiver is a benefit from our IGI Global database subscription).  The article processing fee is waived after the paper is peer-reviewed and accepted into an IGI Global journal.

Please note that all article processing charge waivers are processed by IGI Global's administrative staff and not the journal's editorial team in order to maintain the integrity of the peer-review process. We kindly ask that authors do not disclose any information regarding article processing charge waivers and discounts to the journal Editor-in-Chief or the Editorial Advisory Board.

Hindawi – (This program is no longer offered by the publisher and ended on August 31, 2019. Authors will be billed an APC fee if submitting a manuscript after August 31, 2019)
MDPI - FIU authors are entitled to a 10% discount on the article-processing charge (APC) when publishing in an MDPI publication.

How to claim your discount:

1 -  Authors are prompted in the last step of submission to determine if they are eligible for discounts under the open access program

2 -  The program is pre-selected if authors are submitting from within the campus network (IP range detection)
