This workshop is designed for those who are completely new to GIS. The workshop will start with a short discussion on maps and cartography, followed by a series of short lecture presentations and how-to’s, supplemented with hands-on exercises.

Included in the $650.00 registration fee is a copy of the textbook/workbook to be used during the workshop:

Mastering ArcGIS (6th Edtion, with accompanying CD-ROM). Maribeth Price. (ISBN: 978-0-07-802142-8)

If students wish to purchase and bring their own copy of the text, they may do so, and their workshop registration fee will be reduced to $550.00 (rather than the standard price of $650.00). Students who exercise this option, must ensure that they purchase the correct version of the text (6th Edition), with the accompanying workshop and data CD-ROM.

Workshop Instructor: 
Matthew is the MIUS Coordinator at the GIS Center. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Geography at the University of Miami and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and International Relations at Florida International University. As a geographer, Matthew’s research endeavors lie at the socio-ecological interface, where people interact with and produce environmental configurations. He has co-authored publications on subjects as diverse as land-change conflicts in rural landscapes of southern Laos to the public health impacts of walkability in the urban landscapes of metropolitan Miami. Matthew’s use of geospatial technologies is focused primarily on land-use/land-cover change, spatial planning and geodesign, and cartography and geovisual communication.
