The exhibition, organized with the assistance of Miami writer Joel Weinstein, features some of Mr. Trasobares's most trenchant works, including embroidered and printed pillows, recent money sculptures, and a selection of drawings and collages from the artist's long career. Mr. Trasobares has been active as an artist since 1972. His subject is life at the border of propriety and what lies beneath and beyond-including rituals as diverse as the quinceañera and art museum board meetings-and his styles are equally varied. Social Fabric will run from November 13, 2002, to January 31, 2003. An artist's talk will take place on Wednesday November 13 at 3:30 PM and a reception will take place on December 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Both events are free and open to the public.

Mr. Trasobares approaches the making of art as an anthropologist might do it, but also like a particularly resourceful, old-fashioned craftsman, so his take on the foibles of Miami's cultural life has been both probing and fond. His first significant artistic project dealt with the Cuban Quinceañera, and he subsequently undertook several other works exploring exile culture. This phase culminated with the widely praised installation Elian in Wonderland at the Bass Museum's globe>miami

As an artist, Mr. Trasobares has also critically examined the murky mechanics of the art world and the duplicities of language. He has made sculptures inspired by furniture as well as by money, and, in general, finds interest in all things related to material culture. In everything he has done, he has sought to expand the traditionally passive role of the artist in contemporary society to one of an activist laborer and educator. Among his most significant roles in this regard was that of project artist for the Artful Truth program at the Wolfsonian-FIU, and he has also distinguished himself as a curator, lecturer, writer, performer, and art administrator.

In addition to artworks, Social Fabric will include documentary information about Mr. Trasobares's career. Students will also be able to hear the artist first hand, during addresses to student groups. An illustrated catalog, with an essay by Joel Weinstein, will be available at the public reception.
