from the
John and Ideal Gladstone Archival Collection

Reception: Friday, March 16, 2001, 4 - 6 p.m.,
Steven and Dorothea Green Library - Room 220

The Art Museum and the Steven and Dorothea Green Library are pleased to host Winslow Homer Wood Engravings from the John and Ideal Gladstone Archival Collection. This exhibition, inspired by the recent gift from the Gladstone Archival Collection, features wood engravings and the leather bound collection of Harper's Weekly from 1861 to 1865.

Winslow Homer is among the most important 19th century American artists. At the beginning of his career, in 1857, Homer became an artist-correspondent for Harper's Weekly. His drawings turned wood engravings chronicled the events of the 19th century-from the consequences of the Civil War to the daily life of the middle class. Today, Homer's images continue to serve as a remarkable visual record of this extraordinary time in American history.

In the late 1960s, John and Ideal Gladstone began collecting Winslow Homer's wood engravings. They became interested in wood engravings both as a technique and as an expression of art that is no longer regularly practiced. I wish to acknowledge the vision and generosity of John and Ideal Gladstone.
