Library for the 21st Century

MIAMI, FL (October 1, 1998) -- After three years of construction, Florida International University's Green Library at University Park is finally ready for the 21st Century.

Former trustee and current ambassador of the U.S. to Singapore, Steven Green and his wife Dorothea will fly in from Singapore to celebrate the inauguration of the library which bears their name.

This momentous occasion for FIU and the community took place today at University Park, 112th Avenue and Southwest Eighth Street.

This is one of the first libraries built for the 21st Century, said FIU President Modesto A. Maidique. The facility handles books and technology with the same ease and efficiency: it is a window into the future of the information age.

The Green Library, which is a public facility, is home to many other resources and state-of-the-art technology that provide the university and community with effective centralized library services such as access to 700 full-text electronic journal subscriptions.

FIU is grateful to State Senator Mario Diaz Balart, who worked diligently to help the university secure funds to complete the Green Library. Additional contributions made by the Greens helped the library become a reality.

The Green Library is the architectural centerpiece of University Park. The $40 million, 8-story library is home to more than 1 million books, 90 electronic databases and 200 computer terminals.

Laurence Miller, Executive Director of FIU libraries, says that the Green Library is one of the most modern electronic infrastructures in the United States, and one of the largest academic library buildings in the Southeastern U.S. Its design will allow it to accommodate changes in information technology for the next century.

The 230,000 square foot structure accommodates approximately 2,000 students and faculty members, and holds 1,100,000 volumes catalogued according to the Library of Congress classification system.
