Searching RILM Abstracts


RILM (Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale) Abstracts of Music Literature, published by Rèpertoire International de Littèrature Musicale, New York, contains records in over 200 languages; entries include original-language titles, title translations in English, full bibliographic information, and abstracts in English, as well as author, journal, and in-depth subject indexes. RILM currently contains nearly 300,000 entries. Approximately 20,000 new entries are added annually. RILM offers a broad international coverage base and it includes music related works from articles, books, bibliographies, dissertations, film & video to concert reviews and recording notes - provided the items are of scholarly interest. Subject areas include: historical musicology, ethnomusicology, instruments and voice, librarianship, performance practice and notation, theory and analysis, pedagogy, liturgy, dance, criticism, music therapy, and interdisciplinary studies on music and various other fields, including literature, dramatic arts, visual arts, acoustics, aesthetics, anthropology, sociology, linguistics and semiotics, mathematics, philosophy, physiology, psychology, and physics.


BASIC SEARCH


Use the Basic Search for simple searches with the broadest possible retrieval.
Check Keyword and type: spirituals and click Search.

You can limit your results by publication date(s) by clicking on the drop-down Date boxes.
note: At present, there is no full-text in RILM Abstracts.

Search tips:

Use the asterisk(*) to retrieve variant endings of word stems: sonat* retrieves sonata, sonatas, sonatina or sonatinas.

song* retrieves song or songs.

Use Boolean operators (and, or, not) to broaden searches:

song* or lied*
chant or plainchant
concerto* not brandenburg

Use the asterisk (*) to retrieve variant endings of word stems:

sonat*retrieves sonata, sonatas, sonatina, or sonatinas

Group terms in parenthesis for broader retrieval

(plainsong or plainchant) and josquin

ADVANCED SEARCH


Searching in the Advanced Search mode give you the option of limiting your search in a variety of ways, (i.e. document type: articles, dissertations, etc.) language, year or a specific journal.

From the Basic Search screen, click on Advanced Search.

Fill in the information boxes, incorporating any of the search techniques demonstrated above.

Then, click the drop-down boxes to restrict retrieval to various fields, as appropriate, i.e. author, subject, journal title (SO), etc..



EXPERT (COMMAND) SEARCHING


Command searching (from either search screen) gives you the flexibility of searching with more precise, focused retrieval. Using some of the field labels given below, you can execute the following searches incorporating previously mentioned search techniques. Some of the more common field labels are:

au (author)

ti (title or terms in the title)

so (publication title)

su (subject)

yr (year published)

To find an article on the treatment of sonata form in the works of either Haydn or Schubert which appeared in Music Theory Spectrum:

su sonata form and (haydn or schubert) and so music theory spectrum

To find a specific article when you know some of the information:

au gauldin and ti preludes

To find publications on Brahms in 1996:

su brahms and yr 1996


Marking Records

Individual records may be printed, e-mailed or saved to disc. Multiple records may be added to a Folder to be printed, e-mailed or saved as a group. Click "Add to folder" in each citation.
