How do I find a book on a musical subject?

Use the library Catalog. This is the database of the library's holdings of books, audiovisual materials, scores, etc. Some sample searches:

A book on the quartets of Mozart:

Chose a Basic Search and select Keyword.  Type:

mozart  quartet? [Submit Search]

The question mark (?) is a truncation symbol and retrieves any variations on the word stem, (i.e. quartet, quartets). Items marked [sound] are recordings.

A biography of Hector Berlioz:

Choose a Basic Search, select Subject and type: berlioz, hector [Submit Search]

*Subject searches are very restrictive. You must use exact Library of Congress subject headings found in the Subject line(s) of a Catalog record. Consult a reference librarian if you need help. You can also click on the underlined subject heading to conduct comprehensive searches on that particular subject.

Use the library Catalog and from the Advanced Search screen under Format:, select the sound format you wish (CD, LP, etc). In the other search boxes, you may select author, title, keyword, among others. All recordings will be located on the 5th floor in the Audiovisual department.

HINT: To search for a particular performer, conductor, or performing group, do an author search (Author's Name) using the last name + first name format. [armstrong, louis]. Examples: solti / meistersinger; bolero / ravel; flagstad / wagner

How do I locate articles in music journals, magazines, etc.?

Use one of the indexing sources for music literature listed below -- either print or electronic-- to identify those articles of interest. Then using a Journal/Magazine Search in the library Catalog, determine whether the library subscribes to the periodical and if so, for the time period you need. (see How do I know if the Library subscribes to the periodical I need?)

Interlibrary Loan Services

Interlibrary Loan is one of the great marvels of library services. If the library does not subscribe to the journal, book, or score you need, this office can borrow it (or a photocopy) from another library. You may come in to the Interlibrary Loan office on the 2nd floor, or request it online with the Interlibrary Loan form. You will be notified when the item is available for pick up.

If a book you need is located at the North Miami campus, you may request it online by using the Intercampus Loan form.

Circulation policies

Music reference books do not circulate.

Items in the General Collection (5th floor) may be checked out.

Videos may be checked out from the Audiovisual department (5th floor) for a period of two weeks for faculty and graduate students; three days for undergraduate students. Sound recordings circulate for two weeks. You may use the Online Request Forms to extend your lending period. Select "Automatic Online Renewals." You may also use a form from this page to request an item that is currently checked out or "In Process."

Searching other libraries' catalogs

You can also search the libraries belonging to the Southeast Florida Information Network, known as SEFLIN.  This is a consortium of regional libraries and includes academic, public and special libraries.

Accessing library resources from off campus
