Library Research Guide

Steps to Finding Library Resources:

1. Go to the Library Homepage.  - http://library.fiu.edu/

 

2. Click off-campus access

 


 

  

3. To Find articles in Public Administration click Research (tab @ top).

 



 

 

4. Try the Quick Research Databases.



 

 

 

5. Click Public Administration for the library databases available.



 

  

6. Databases in Public Administration - search any of these using your keywords.  Remember you need to think like a computer.  For example, if your topic is on unions and you don't get any results, what other words can you use?  labor relations?  organized labor?  trade union?  ...

 

 

 

7. Sample Search in Academic OneFile.



 

 

 

8. Notice the Results Page - options to limit your results to Peer-Reviewed, Tabs for Academic Journals, Magazines, Books, News, & Multimedia. 

 

 

 

9. Also, notice that many of the databases list DESCRIPTORS/SUBJECTS for the articles.  If you see one that works for you, try it out!

 

 

10. When you find an item you want, click on the link to full-text. If there is not a link to full-text, click on FIND IT @ FIU. A new window opens and searches for the full‐text of the article across 300+ databases. Below are options for getting the full‐text of the article.

     

    

     

     

11. If the FIND IT @ FIU menu says: Sorry, no holdings were found for this journal.  This means the full-text is not online but it doesn't mean you can't get the article!

 

 

12. If you are searching for a specific journal, try the E-Journals tab on the library homepage or the e-journal portal on the research page.  Just remember this just searches the libraries Electronic Journals and not the journals in the libraries print collection.  This will help you with your assignment to identify research in particular journals.  For example, if you search for the Review of Public Personnel Administration, you will see that it is in our Highwire Press and Sage Premier Collections. 

 

 

13. Use Intercampus Loan to request an article delivered to your desktop from one FIU Campus to another.

 

14. Use Interlibrary Loan to request an article delivered to your desktop when it is not in FIU Libraries.
