The University Libraries collaborate with the University community to build collections, facilitate access to global information resources, and provide services in support of the University’s teaching, service, and research missions. The Libraries engage users in the discovery and pursuit of knowledge.

 

The University Libraries will be a center – an intellectual crossroads – for learning and research at the University.

 

 

1.1	We will provide a library environment that reflects the needs of the faculty, staff, and students.
1.1.1	Continue work of space committees on both campuses incorporating user input.
1.1.2	Seek funding to implement recommendations.
1.1.3	Continue to enhance student study spaces with appropriate infrastructure to support individual and collaborative learning.
1.2	We will co-sponsor programs and functions with faculty and students to develop the Libraries as community spaces and to promote collections.
1.3	We will recover library space and add space where possible.
1.3.1	Recover all library space on fourth floor of Green Library.
1.3.2	Expand group study space as collections go into storage in the Libraries.
1.3.3	Expand library into campus administrative support area on the third floor of Biscayne Bay Library.
1.4	We will continue to invest in physical infrastructure to support and maximize work efficiency of users and staff.
1.5	We will create environmentally friendly work and study spaces.
1.6	We will review and implement where possible the proposal from the College of Architecture and the Arts project for the use of public space on the first floor of Green Library.

2.1	Continue to develop and enhance the Libraries’ web site to provide access to library resources and services to users whenever and wherever they are needed.
2.1.1	Identify and implement best practices for web design and development to provide a dynamic and effective library web portal that is user focused and facilitates easy access to library services and collections.
2.1.2	Sustain partnerships with Division of Information Technology to ensure conformance with University-wide IT initiatives and policies, and to facilitate access to information in a networked environment.
2.2	Continue to develop and expand user services that can be accessed and delivered 24/7.
2.2.1	Expand virtual collaboration and references services by using a variety of platforms to communicate with users in real time.
2.2.2	Continue to support enhancements to ALEPH in consultation with FCLA and the state university libraries.
2.2.3	Continue to provide and develop electronic tools to facilitate the user’s ability to identify, access, and use scholarly information.

 

3.1	We will collaborate with the University’s departments and schools and incorporate their needs into collection development strategies.
3.1.1	Continue to build closer working relationships between liaisons and faculty.
3.2	We will develop distinctive, strategic collections – both print and digital – in partnership with the College of Law and College of Medicine Libraries.
3.2.1	Continue to focus on three strategic areas for growth: global health, global environment, and international studies.
3.3	We will expand efforts to participate in teaching and research programs that involve geospatial data and its analysis and visualization.
3.4	We will expand development of digital collections to support the University’s teaching, learning, and research needs.
3.5	We will collect, preserve, and disseminate information about south Florida.
3.6	We will expand efforts to build an FIU institutional repository.
3.6.1	Continue the pilot project for electronic theses and dissertations with the University Graduate School.
3.6.2	Develop a plan for expanding the repository to other subject areas.
3.7	We will improve collection management by expanding the analysis of holdings, costs, and usage.

 

4.1	We will promote closer collaboration with teaching faculty, academic programs, and the Division of Information Technology.
4.1.1	We will clarify and strengthen the role of library liaisons as partners with teaching faculty and academic departments.
4.1.2	We will increase involvement with the Center for Excellence in Writing and the Academy for the Art of Teaching.
4.2	We will market our resources and services to our internal and external communities.
4.2.1	We will engage our students in assessing their needs and in developing services to meet those needs.
4.3	We will expand relationships with external partners.
4.3.1	Working with University Advancement and the Libraries Advisory Board, we will expand our network of donors and friends, to build research collections and to support the work of the Libraries.
4.3.2	We will seek partnerships with area and state libraries and museums to support educational programs in our various institutions.
4.3.3	We will seek opportunities to promote the Libraries in the south Florida community.
